How to test a modem using Hyperterminal

• Before you start find out the COM port the modem is using by going to Control Panel and into modems. Clicking on Diagnostics will show you which COM port yor modem is installed on.
• Then, start Hyperterminal. The easiest way to do this is by going to Start, Run then type hypertrm
• Hyperterminal will prompt you to choose a name and select an icon for the connection. Call it test and press OK.
• Then you will be prompted for a phone number and area code. At the bottom of this box you will see your modem listed. Select "Direct to COMx" where x is the number of the COM port your modem is installed on. All the other fields should "grey out". Press OK.
• The next screen should be for Port Settings. The default settings are all we need. Just click OK.
• You are now in the terminal screen.
• Type at and press enter. You should now see:

• If you didn't see what you typed, don't worry, as long as you got the OK its fine. If you particularly want to see what you are typing then type ate1 and press enter.
• Now to dial type atdt5556969 (where 5556969 is the phone number of the ISP). You should see:

• Enter your username, press enter. Enter your password, press enter. Then type ppp at the prompt. Then you should see this:

• It will disconnect after a few seconds. (This is what is meant by NO CARRIER)
• If you have managed to complete all of this then your modem is fully capable of dialling out.
• You may want to try specifying different port speeds on the Port Settings screen if you are still having problems connecting normally.
